Teeth grinding (bruxism); what treatments are available?

27 February 2026

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common condition in which people unconsciously clench their teeth tightly together or grind them against each other. This often happens at night, but it can also occur during the day due to stress or concentration.

Long-term teeth grinding can lead to jaw pain, headaches, tooth wear, and even widening of the jaw muscles. Fortunately, several treatment options are available, such as a custom-made night guard or Botox injections in the jaw muscles.

Because the cause and severity vary from person to person, it is important to compare treatments and clinics. The right approach depends on symptoms, muscle activity, and personal preference.

Teeth grinding (bruxism); what treatments are available?

In short: this is what you need to know about teeth grinding treatments

• Teeth grinding is caused by overactive jaw muscles
• Possible treatments: a night guard, stress management, or Botox
• Botox reduces muscle strength and tension
• Results from Botox are visible within 1–2 weeks
• The effect lasts on average 3–6 months
• Safe when properly indicated and performed by an experienced doctor
• Comparing options helps you make a suitable and safe choice

Why results and experiences with teeth grinding treatments can vary

Why do people respond differently to a teeth grinding treatment?

People respond differently to a teeth grinding treatment because the cause of bruxism varies from person to person. Factors such as stress, neurological activity, jaw alignment, and muscle mass influence the tension in the chewing muscles. When botulinum toxin is used, it blocks the signal transmission between nerve and muscle, but the level of muscle activity and individual sensitivity determine how strong this effect will be. In addition, metabolism, muscle strength, and injection technique differ, which affects the duration and intensity of the result. As a result, the reduction of grinding and jaw tension can vary per person.

Why does botulinum toxin work faster for some people than for others?

Botulinum toxin works faster for some people than for others because individual biological factors differ. The speed at which the substance binds to nerve endings and blocks the release of acetylcholine depends on muscle activity, blood circulation, and metabolism. With higher muscle activity or better blood circulation, absorption and effect may occur more quickly. In addition, dose, injection site, and technique influence how quickly the signal transmission between nerve and muscle is reduced. Therefore, the moment when visible muscle relaxation occurs varies from person to person.

Why does the experienced result differ?

The experienced result differs because both biological and psychological factors vary from person to person. Anatomy, skin quality, muscle structure, and metabolism determine how a treatment spreads within the tissue and how strong the effect is. In addition, expectations, sensitivity to changes, and previous experiences influence how someone perceives the effect. Even when the objective medical effect is the same, the subjective experience may differ due to variations in interpretation and attention to subtle changes. As a result, the same type of treatment can be experienced differently.

Why do prices vary per clinic?

Prices vary per clinic because cost structures and treatment conditions differ. Factors such as rent, staffing costs, products used, and investment in equipment determine fixed and variable expenses. The experience and qualification level of the practitioner also influence the price, as specialized expertise involves higher costs. Differences in consultation time, aftercare, and the amount of product used also play a role in the total price. Therefore, the final treatment price can vary from one clinic to another.

Why is comparing important for bruxism treatments?

Comparing is important for bruxism treatments because the cause, severity, and treatment strategy may differ per clinic. The dosage used, injection technique, and medical assessment influence how effective and safe the treatment is. In addition, the practitioner’s experience, consultation duration, and aftercare vary, which affects the final result and how long it lasts. Price structures and included follow-up appointments may also differ. By comparing these factors, you gain better insight into quality, approach, and expected outcome.v

What are the treatments for teeth grinding & how do they work?

Teeth grinding treatment at a glance

Type of treatment: medical / injectable or dental
Goal: reduce overactive jaw muscles
Visible result: yes (with Botox, a cosmetic effect is also possible)
Average duration: 15–30 minutes (Botox)
Main success factor: correct diagnosis and practitioner’s experience

What does Botox do for teeth grinding?

Botox temporarily relaxes the chewing muscle (masseter). This reduces the force of clenching and helps relieve pain symptoms.

How does a night guard work against teeth grinding?

A night guard protects the teeth from wear and reduces pressure on teeth and molars, but it does not fully stop muscle activity.

Is the effect permanent?

No. Botox works temporarily. A night guard works as long as it is worn.

What can go wrong with a teeth grinding treatment?

With a teeth grinding treatment, side effects may occur such as temporary swelling, tenderness, or a bruised feeling in the jaw. In rare cases, chewing strength may temporarily feel reduced or mild asymmetry may develop. The risk depends less on the product itself and more on correct dosage, technique, and knowledge of anatomy. That is why comparing doctors and clinics is important for safety and a balanced result.

How can you recognize a less successful jaw muscle treatment?

A less optimally performed treatment may present as asymmetry, an excessive reduction in chewing strength, or an unnatural feeling while chewing. Sometimes the jaw may feel fatigued more quickly or the result may appear uneven. This does not necessarily mean the treatment is unsafe, but that the dosage or placement was not fully balanced. An experienced doctor can assess this and, if necessary, make adjustments.

How much Botox do you typically need for teeth grinding?

The amount of Botox varies per person and depends on the strength and size of the chewing muscles. On average, between 20 and 50 units are used per treatment, divided over both jaw muscles. More units do not automatically mean a better result; a careful, personalized dosage usually ensures a natural and functional effect. During the consultation, the doctor determines what is appropriate.

When do you see the full result of a jaw muscle treatment?

The effect of a Botox treatment for teeth grinding is usually noticeable within one to two weeks. In the first few days, the muscle may still be partially active. The final result is typically assessed around two weeks, when the muscle is fully relaxed and any tenderness has resolved. This moment is often used to check whether the effect is optimal.

What is the difference between a night guard and Botox for teeth grinding?

A night guard protects the teeth from wear and distributes pressure during grinding. Botox temporarily relaxes the overactive jaw muscles, reducing the force of clenching. A night guard works protectively, while Botox reduces the muscle activity itself. Which treatment is suitable depends on the cause, severity of symptoms, and personal preference. In some cases, both methods are combined for a more comprehensive result.

I had a lovely consultation with Rosie, who was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and made me feel completely at ease. She explained everything clearly and answered all of my questions, which made me feel really confident about going ahead with the treatment.

The procedure itself was very quick and comfortable. Rosie was very professional and reassuring throughout.

I’ve just had my follow-up appointment and I’m so pleased with the results. The treatment has helped my symptoms massively — I’m sleeping much better and my jaw feels far less tense. It has made a huge difference.

Overall, a really positive experience and I would highly recommend Rosie and the team at Pro Aesthetic. Show less »

I visited today for a consultation with Dr Avi Riley and had such a great experience. Firstly, the reception staff were so friendly and welcoming, they instantly put me at ease. I then went through to my appointment, and Avi really took the time to listen to my concerns. I initially went for a consultation on having aesthetic treatment for teeth grinding pain, but Avi informed me that I didn’t need it at all and that it was actually an issue to do with my bite. It was so refreshing to have her explain to me what was causing all of my pain, and she has now referred me on to get the issue solved. She took pictures and X-rays completely free of charge and offered so much reassurance. Thank you so much! Show less »
