Remove under-eye bags

26 February 2026

Read everything about removing under-eye bags: compare clinics, prices, doctors and reviews and Treatments for under-eye bags are intended for people who want to look fresher and more rested, without the result appearing unnatural or overtreated. As we age, the skin around the eyes loses volume, firmness and hydration. This can cause shadows, swelling or a hollow tear trough. In others, under-eye bags are naturally present due to anatomy, fluid retention or muscle activity.

A treatment for under-eye bags can improve this in a controlled and temporary way. Depending on the cause, fillers, botox, skinboosters or a combination of these may be chosen. By applying the right product in the right place, a subtle and natural result is achieved that suits the face. The final outcome strongly depends on the diagnosis, technique and experience of the doctor, as well as on the individual anatomy. Therefore, it is important to clearly understand which treatment is suitable, what you can realistically expect and why comparing doctors and clinics is essential. Choose what is safe for you.

This is what you need to know about treating under-eye bags

• Treatments focus on reducing under-eye bags, shadows and a tired appearance

• Results are often visible immediately and stabilize within a few days

• The effect lasts on average 6 to 12 months, depending on the treatment

• Safety strongly depends on the correct diagnosis, technique and experience of the doctor

• By comparing clinics and doctors, you can see differences in treatment choice, approach and price

Why results and experiences with treating under-eye bags can differ

Why does the result of treating under-eye bags look different for everyone?

The result of under-eye bag treatment differs per person due to variations in fat displacement, skin thickness and the bone structure of the eye socket. Under-eye bags can develop due to fat protrusion, volume loss or fluid retention, which require different treatment mechanisms. When filler is used, volume is added to reduce shadowing; the effect depends on the depth and placement in the tear trough area. Skin elasticity and blood circulation also influence how the tissue responds. As a result, the visible reduction of shadows and swelling varies per person.

Why does the result of under-eye bag treatment sometimes look different at first than later?

After a treatment of under-eye bags with filler, the result may look different in the first few days due to swelling and fluid retention. The injection causes a local inflammatory response, temporarily attracting extra fluid to the treated area. In addition, hyaluronic acid binds water, which can enhance volume in the initial phase. As the swelling decreases and the product distributes evenly in the tissue, the final effect stabilizes. Therefore, the first visible result may differ from the later, final result.

Why are multiple sessions sometimes needed for under-eye bag treatment?

When treating under-eye bags, more than one session is sometimes needed because the area is anatomically thin and sensitive. A large amount of filler in one session increases the risk of swelling, irregularities or overcorrection. By gradually building up the volume, the product can integrate in a controlled manner into the surrounding tissue. Between sessions, it can be assessed how the body responds and how the result develops. This phased approach reduces complications and ensures a more even final result.

Why do prices for under-eye bag treatments differ per clinic?

Prices for under-eye bag treatments differ per clinic because the materials used and the quality of equipment vary. Clinics with experienced doctors and specialized injection techniques generally have higher rates due to their expertise and lower risk of complications. In addition, location costs, overhead and the brand products used influence the price. Differences in consultation duration and aftercare policies may also contribute to price variations between treatment centers.

Why is comparing clinics for under-eye bag treatment important?

Comparing clinics for under-eye bag treatment is important because the experience and qualifications of the practitioner influence safety and outcome. This area contains thin skin and delicate blood vessels, making precise injection technique necessary to prevent complications. Clinics differ in the products used, dosage and treatment strategy, which can affect the result. Protocols for hygiene, aftercare and complication management also vary. By comparing these factors, the risk of unwanted effects can be reduced.

What does an under-eye bag treatment do & how does it work?

Under-eye bags in brief

• Type of treatment: filler, botox, skinbooster or combination
Goal: reducing under-eye bags, shadows and a tired appearance
Visible result: often visible immediately, optimal after 1–2 weeks
Average duration: ± 15–30 minutes
Main success factor: correct diagnosis, technique and experience of the doctor

What exactly does the treatment do for under-eye bags?

When treating under-eye bags, the cause of the bags is assessed. Depending on that cause, a filler may be used to correct volume loss, botox to reduce muscle activity or a skinbooster to improve skin quality. The goal is a fresh and natural appearance, without the area looking overtreated.

How does the treatment for under-eye bags proceed?

Preparation: analysis of the eye region and discussion of wishes and expectations
Treatment: injections with a fine needle or cannula in specific areas under the eyes
Immediately after: mild swelling, redness or sensitivity may occur
After a few days: swelling decreases and the result looks calmer and more natural

Is this treatment a permanent procedure for under-eye bags?

No. The products used are gradually broken down by the body. The result is temporary and periodic maintenance is required to maintain the effect.

Remove under-eye bags

What can go wrong when treating under-eye bags?

When treating under-eye bags, mild and temporary side effects may occur, such as swelling, redness, sensitivity and small bruises at the injection sites. These reactions are normal and occur because the thin skin and underlying tissue respond to the injections and products used, such as fillers, botox or skinboosters. In most cases, these symptoms disappear on their own within a few days. Serious complications are rare, especially when the treatment is performed by an experienced doctor with knowledge of the complex anatomy of the eye region.

Which side effects are most common with this treatment for under-eye bags?

The most common side effects are mild swelling under the eyes, redness around the injection points, sensitivity and sometimes bruising. Immediately after the treatment, the area may temporarily look somewhat fuller, uneven or swollen. This is due to fluid retention, injection response and the vulnerability of the skin around the eyes. Usually, these side effects decrease within a few days and the result gradually appears calmer and more natural.

Can the treated area for under-eye bags feel lumpy or uneven?

Shortly after the treatment, small lumps or irregularities may be felt or visible. This occurs because the product still needs to distribute and due to temporary swelling. In most cases, these irregularities disappear on their own within a few days to a week. Sometimes the doctor may advise leaving the area undisturbed temporarily or, if necessary, scheduling a follow-up appointment. If the irregularities persist longer, it is advisable to contact the practitioner.

Is treating under-eye bags safe in the long term?

Treatments with hyaluronic acid fillers, botox and skinboosters have been used for many years in cosmetic medicine and are considered safe when used correctly. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body that is gradually broken down. With proper indication, careful technique and sufficient recovery time between treatments, long-term problems are rare.

Is treating under-eye bags safe in the long term?

Although serious complications are rare, they may occur in exceptional cases. These include infections, prolonged swelling, visible asymmetry, worsening discoloration or — very rarely — vascular complications. The risk of this is higher in the eye region than in some other areas, which further emphasizes the importance of an experienced doctor. When addressed promptly, complications are usually treatable.

When should you contact a doctor regarding under-eye bags?

Contact a doctor immediately in case of severe pain, increasing swelling, persistent redness, warmth, signs of infection, sudden discoloration of the skin, reduced sensation or clear asymmetry that does not decrease within a few days. When in doubt, always contact sooner rather than later.

Can the result for under-eye bags be corrected?

Yes. When hyaluronic acid fillers have been used, the result can be corrected if necessary with the enzyme hyaluronidase. This can safely reduce excess volume, asymmetry or an undesired effect. This makes under-eye bag treatments relatively flexible and safer than permanent procedures.

Popular treatment areas when treating under-eye bags

How long does the result of treating under-eye bags last & aftercare

On average, the effect of a treatment remains visible for 6 to 12 months, depending on the product and the chosen technique. After this period, the result gradually decreases and a repeat treatment may be needed to maintain the effect.

Aftercare:

• Cool the treated area during the first hours after the treatment if necessary.
• Avoid pressure on the eyes and intense physical activity for 24 hours.
• Avoid sauna, tanning beds and heat immediately after the treatment.
• Follow all aftercare advice from your doctor for an optimal and safe result.

Who is under-eye bag treatment suitable for (and not)?

• Want a fresher, more rested appearance
• Accept a temporary, non-permanent solution
• Find a subtle and natural result important

How do you determine if it suits you?

  1. 1 How severe are your under-eye bags?
  2. 2 Do you want immediate or subtle results?
  3. 3 Which areas require the doctor’s experience?
  4. 4 Do you want a temporary or periodic treatment?
  5. 5 Which doctor has experience with under-eye fillers?

After 15+ years of feeling very self conscious about my under-eye bags, and trying everything else, I finally accepted they were genetic (thanks, Dad!) and that surgery was the only real solution.
After LOTS of research and recommendations, I booked a consultation with Mr Marando at STAR Clinic. He was professional, honest, understanding and reassuring — clearly explaining the procedure, recovery and realistic results. His calm, thorough and transparent approach made me feel completely confident and at ease.
I decided to have both upper and lower blepharoplasty, and the care from the whole STAR team was outstanding - from consultation to aftercare. Also the nursing care during my surgery was amazing.
Almost 4 weeks on, with a little concealer, you’d never know I’d had surgery! And I know this is still early days.
The results are transformational - I feel confident, refreshed, and like myself again, no longer hiding under glasses I don’t need to wear.
I can’t thank Mr Marando and the team enough for their skill, precision and care, and my only regret is not doing it sooner. Show less »

After experiencing procedures somewhere else and not getting very good results, I was so worried about attending my appointment with Bonnie. However Bonnie put me at ease and in our consultation she went in depth about the different procedures and what would be best for me. On Bonnie's recommendation I had a mid face filler.
In Bonnie's words, "Mid-face filler has such great advantages, including providing liveliness and freshness to the skin, reducing under-eye bags and dark circles, enhancing cheekbone definition and correcting facial contours, addressing cheek hollows, and reducing nasolabial lines.
Adding a little definition to the chin too will create a more defined and slimmer looking facial shape."
IT did all the above and more! I came out a more confident 62 year old woman. I would highly recommend Bonnie and her team. Show less »

Under-eye bag treatments are often compared with:

Fillers (restoring volume loss and reducing shadows)
Botox (reducing muscle activity that emphasizes under-eye bags)
Skinboosters (improving skin quality and hydration, no volume correction)

Comparing doctors & clinics for under-eye bag treatment

When treating under-eye bags, small differences in technique and product choice can make a big difference in the result. That is why experience and knowledge of the eye region are more important than the brand of filler or product that is used.
