You may have questions after a Botox treatment about aftercare, skin reactions, and what else you can do and expect. Is it normal for the treated area to feel sensitive? How often can I apply cooling? This article provides tips, advice, and information about aftercare following a treatment with botulinum toxin.
What should you avoid after Botox?
After a Botox treatment, there are a few guidelines to follow. Doctor Margaritha Adams from Waterland Clinic explains in the following video: What should you not do after Botox?
Botulinum toxin is an active substance used in medical treatments. Since the 1980s, more than 100 million treatments have been carried out worldwide. In addition to cosmetic treatments, botulinum toxin is widely used in medicine, for example against spasms and overactive muscles in neurology and urology.
As a cosmetic treatment, Botox is most often used for frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. But it can also be used to treat a gummy smile, teeth grinding, migraine, and excessive sweating.

What is Botox?
Many people experience a strange feeling after their first Botox treatment. You may feel like you have trouble focusing, for example while walking or reading a book. Some people experience mild headaches. These complaints usually disappear after a night’s rest. With subsequent Botox treatments, these complaints no longer occur.
Botulinum toxin typically becomes active 3–5 days after injection. Dysport works the fastest, on average after 24 hours. Botox becomes active after 72 hours, and Bocouture/Xeomin after about 96 hours. After 7 days, all three products should be working optimally.

Complications are rare. The most commonly reported issues are that the eyebrows have either lifted too much or started to droop. When an eyebrow droops, it can create a more tired appearance. This does not happen often and can partly be corrected with a follow-up treatment. Once the botulinum toxin has worn off, the unwanted effect will disappear on its own.
We humans don’t really have control over how we sleep. However, it is strongly advised not to lie down within the first 4 hours after a Botox treatment. After that, it doesn’t matter how you sleep on your back, stomach, or side it won’t affect the results of the Botox.
Teeth grinding (bruxism)
Platysma bands (relaxed neck)
Touch-up (to optimize the treatment)
Bunny lines (wrinkles on the side of the nose toward the eyes)
Nose tip lift
Lip flip (slightly fuller lips without filler)
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
A Botox treatment may cause side effects such as redness, bruising, small bumps, or sensitivity in the treated area. These symptoms can last from a few hours up to two weeks after treatment. They are common occurrences following the procedure.
If complications arise after your treatment and you have questions about them, it is advisable to contact the clinic where you were treated.

We advise not to rub or massage the treated area during the first 24 hours after a Botox treatment. Especially in the first 8 hours, it is important to avoid massaging when applying or removing makeup or when cleansing your face. For the first 4 hours after treatment, you should not lie down or do any strenuous activities.
Then the muscles become active again. You will be able to frown, and your forehead wrinkles will reappear.
In the first 6 to 8 hours, the botulinum toxin can shift, making the treatment less effective if you massage the area.
It is recommended to avoid lying down during the first 4 hours after a Botox treatment.
By frowning, the botulinum toxin is absorbed exactly where it was injected. Many doctors recommend doing this a few times (without overdoing it).
The advice is to avoid alcohol from 24 hours before until 24 hours after a Botox treatment. This helps reduce the risk of bruising and ensures the optimal effect of the botulinum toxin.
It is advised not to lie down or sleep within 4 hours after a Botox treatment.
Right after the treatment, you should avoid rubbing, sleeping, drinking alcohol, sunbathing, and going to the sauna. After several hours or days, these activities can be resumed.
Four hours after a treatment, you can sleep in any position you like. You don’t need to worry about your sleeping posture.
Alcohol thins your blood. After a treatment, a small blood vessel may be vulnerable, and drinking alcohol can increase the chance of developing a small bruise.
It is advised not to consume alcohol on the day of the treatment.
