I’ve always been fairly confident. I’ve never been overly focused on my appearance. During my student days, I could comfortably sit in a pub without any makeup. I embraced the “girl next door” vibe. It was easy because I didn’t have to spend much time on my looks, and honestly, it wasn’t a huge priority for me. I exercised a lot and, being a social person, I spent plenty of time out with friends. After graduating, I started working at a large insurance company. I built my career, entered a relationship, and became a mother at 31. Now, at 36, I’m very happy. Two wonderful sons and a loving husband bring me so much joy. Everything was fine.

Yet recently, I decided to have a lip filler treatment. I noticed my face was slowly losing its youthful fullness. Is that a problem? Not at all. And is it wrong to do something for yourself? Definitely not.

Lean Face

What I noticed? I’ve always had a “girl-next-door” face. My face was never particularly “full,” but it was feminine. Over the past few years, though, I started to notice that my face was looking leaner, even though I haven’t lost any weight. And I don’t want to—I’m happy with my weight. I still exercise 2–3 times a week, which is my outlet.

On top of that, it feels like my lips have disappeared. I’ve never had very full lips, but what I had seems to have vanished completely. I decided to look into it, and it turns out that lip volume decreases as we age. Think about it: an average 11-year-old might have naturally full lips, but a typical 35-year-old volleyball player? Barely any. Full lips are really a sign of youth.

I used to associate filled lips with “barbie” or flashy types. But it turns out that for 90% of people, a lip treatment isn’t noticeable at all. Most people don’t want their lip fillers to stand out. Think of it like a tattoo: you can place it somewhere just for yourself, or somewhere everyone will notice. Some people (especially women) want their lip enhancement to be visible, as a kind of style statement—similar to how some dress gothic or hipster. Anyway, my curiosity about lip fillers was piqued. But how does it actually work? Does it hurt? How long do the results last?

I decided to book consultations at three cosmetic clinics in Rotterdam. I told each of them the same thing: I wanted my lips back to how they were, but I didn’t want anyone to notice I’d had treatment. All three clinics recommended 0.5ml, split between the upper and lower lips, which would be more than enough to achieve my goal.

Lip Filler Review

I decided to go with the clinic where I felt the most comfortable. The clinic has great reviews, a friendly practitioner, and a professional, hygienic environment. Before the treatment, I was given EMLA cream, a numbing ointment that needs some time to take effect. The filler itself also contained lidocaine, which helps numb the lips during the procedure.

To be honest, it wasn’t exactly pleasant. It’s definitely not completely painless. I had around 10 injections in both lips. But I’m very happy with the results. No one would be able to tell that I’ve had my lips done. I’ll keep an eye on how long the results last, and when I feel it’s time, I’ll definitely go for a repeat treatment.

I now understand why cosmetic treatments are so popular. A short procedure can really fix a little concern. I’ll never go overboard, but my interest is definitely sparked. I’ve heard that Profhilo works really well for slimmer faces with early wrinkles, so that’s something I’m definitely planning to try.

For now, I don’t have any other plans. I’m just happy I took this step!
