My experience with tear trough fillers

Finally, I went ahead with a treatment for my dark circles. Here, I’m sharing my personal story. My intention is not to encourage anyone else to have the treatment. For me, after weighing all the options, it was a carefully considered decision to be treated by cosmetic doctor B.

Bye-Bye Dark Circles!

I had been bothered by my tired-looking eyes for years. People often asked if I was feeling tired. Especially during winter and spring (hay fever season), I just didn’t look my best, and that frustrated me. I don’t consider myself vain, but I do like to take care of myself—nice clothes, a good hairdresser, regular visits to the beautician. Still, a filler treatment felt like a long way off. I have to admit, the media didn’t help; you read a lot of negative stories about fillers. Plus, I hadn’t really thought about it and didn’t know it could be a solution for dark circles.

At work, I started complaining more and more about my tired-looking eyes. A colleague, Meyra, suggested a year ago that a filler could solve the problem. But at that time, I wasn’t ready to consider it.

Dear Cosmetic Doctor

In the end, I let myself be convinced. Meyra has been visiting cosmetic doctor B for years—and she looks amazing! (I honestly hadn’t expected that she would go to a cosmetic doctor.)

Over the past few months, I did a lot of research. I visited websites, read information, and looked at social media forums. It’s incredibly hard to find reliable information. On social media, the tone was often: “You don’t need that at all” or “All those overdone lips” and “It’s disfiguring.” That really shocked me.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on social media. Don’t I have the right to decide for myself whether I want treatment? Some people ride electric bikes, others wear suits—I don’t comment on that. How can anyone feel entitled to judge someone else’s appearance? You wouldn’t comment if someone got a new perm or hair colour, would you?

On the other hand, I understood that fillers have been used for over 20 years, with more than 300,000 treatments performed in UK each year. Only about 1% go “overboard” and want more fillers. Well, that’s their choice. Some people eat one croquette a week, others eat 25—that’s also their decision.

Together with Meyra, I went for an informational consultation at cosmetic doctor B’s clinic. She was kind and highly professional. She explained the possibilities and risks and showed examples of previous clients. She told me that my dark circles were caused by thin skin, and that the dark colour comes from the blood underneath.

After considering everything, I decided to go ahead with a tear trough treatment. The procedure slightly thickens the skin, making the underlying blood less visible. I booked the treatment!

9-Month Results

When I arrived at the clinic, I felt excited but also a little nervous. Cosmetic doctor B. reassured me. I was given a stress ball to hold, which helped distract me. B. made a small entry point in the skin on my cheek, just below the outer corner of my eye. She attached a thin cannula to a syringe of hyaluronic acid (Belotero) and carefully inserted it under the skin, distributing the filler precisely where it was needed. Apparently, there’s a different type of filler for each area of the face.

How did it feel? I could feel B. touching my skin and moving the cannula. There was a little pressure, but it didn’t hurt at all. B. adjusted the cannula a few times to get the placement just right. Subtly, my tear trough was filled. In just about 15 minutes, the treatment was complete—which I was very happy about.

At home, I immediately applied cold packs to reduce swelling. Over the first two days, the swelling actually got a bit worse. My skin felt tender, and I had one small bruise. By day three, the swelling started to go down. With some concealer over the bruise, I don’t think anyone could tell I’d had treatment. By day nine, I couldn’t see it myself either. What I could see were brighter, more radiant eyes! I can honestly say I’m thrilled with the results—my eyes look much clearer and fresher. I’m so glad I made this decision.

Cosmetic doctor B. says the results typically last around nine months, after which the treatment can be repeated if desired. I paid £275 for this treatment—cheaper than my beautician or hairdresser over nine months! I must admit, I was still a bit surprised that I had actually gone for a filler treatment—it all seemed so distant, something I’d only seen on entertainment news shows.

Even though I hadn’t really thought about fillers before, I was kind of against it initially. “You just don’t do that,” I thought. Looking back, it’s strange why I felt that way. Apparently, I don’t have anyone in my circle who’s open about it. That’s why I’m sharing my story—it’s good for everyone to know all the options. Maybe it will inspire someone else to think: “Okay, I’m going to look into this too.”

I’m absolutely delighted with my tear trough filler!
