Are fillers safe?

In the United Kingdom, an estimated 240,000 filler treatments were carried out in 2023. Research shows that people often feel happier and more confident afterwards. As with any medical treatment, there’s always a small risk of complications – and filler treatments are no exception. So how do you choose a safe filler treatment? And what makes a filler safe? Read on for tips on having fillers done safely.

Are fillers safe?

Spanish and Dutch researchers have discovered that many people who experience severe complications after a filler treatment share similarities in their DNA – specifically in the HLA DRB103 and B08 markers.

These scientists are now extending their research to complications linked to other foreign materials, such as dental implants, hip and knee replacements, heart valves and breast implants. They are investigating whether people who suffer severe complications after receiving such implants also share similarities in their DNA.

The outcome of this research could have major implications for reducing the number of complications linked to implants. It is highly valuable that this line of research has been initiated from within cosmetic medicine.

Safe choice

Around 1–2% of filler treatments result in a serious complication. The risk can be minimised by following these steps:

  1. Choose a doctor with the right training, plenty of experience (600+ treatments a year) and consistently positive Google reviews over time.

  2. Make sure you’re being treated with a high-quality, recognised filler brand.

  3. Check that your body isn’t prone to reacting strongly to foreign implants (such as a filler).

Most people do their research before deciding on a filler treatment. Steps 1 and 2 you can easily check yourself (for example, through this website).

For step 3, you’ll need a filler test. About 1.6% of people test positive. If your test is positive, there’s an 86% chance you will develop a serious complication after a filler treatment.

Does your doctor prioritise safety?

More and more doctors are now offering the “filler DNA test” before a first filler treatment. These doctors focus on safety and believe it’s important to inform patients about the option to test their own immune response. You, as a patient, can then decide whether or not to take the test.
