Laughter lines – you either love them or you don’t. At a young age, they can look endearing, cheerful, and full of character. Back then, they only appear when we smile or laugh, and we often associate them with youthfulness and happiness. As the years go by, however, laughter lines can start to feel less charming. How do laughter lines develop?
Laughter lines are created by the tiny muscles in the face. These muscles are triggered by the brain – for example, when we smile, frown, look surprised, or even squint in bright sunlight, wind, or rain. When you’re young, the skin is very forgiving. It’s firm and full of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. If you picture someone of advanced age, their skin is often thinner and more fragile, slower to heal, and marked by many wrinkles. This ageing process happens gradually. From around the age of 25, the natural levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin begin to decline, and the first wrinkles appear. More often than not, these are laughter lines. Because the skin in this area is folded so frequently, these creases are usually the first to become permanent.
Treatments for laughter lines
There are different types of laughter lines. Both the creases around the eyes and the lines running down the sides of the mouth are often called laughter lines, but each requires a different approach. Generally, the fine lines that appear under the eyes when we smile are referred to as laughter lines. The lines at the corners of the eyes, however, are better known as crow’s feet. These are often treated with Botox. Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin, a substance that works by preventing the muscles from contracting and creating those wrinkles. It’s a very popular treatment and has been safely used for more than 30 years. The effects typically last between 12 and 16 weeks.

Laughter lines around the mouth
Laughter lines around the mouth are the oval-shaped creases that form next to the corners of the lips. They’re sometimes nicknamed “Wi-Fi wrinkles” – as the years go by, an extra curved line appears on the cheek, making the “Wi-Fi logo” bigger. These lines are often treated with dermal fillers. A filler treatment can help lift the skin and restore lost volume.
