Not all clinics use anesthesia for filler treatments. Lidocaine, Emla cream, and dental anesthesia are the most commonly used anesthesia for lip fillers. Compare all clinics on Injectablesbooking.
Most filler treatments are not very painful. The cannula moves under the skin without most clients feeling pain. Lip augmentation is different, however. The lips are very sensitive because they protect the body from hot and burning substances. For lip fillers, anesthesia is generally considered necessary. There are three commonly used anesthesia techniques: dental anesthesia, EMLA cream, and lip fillers with lidocaine. Thanks to anesthesia, lip treatments do not have to be painful.
Dental anesthesia is the most effective numbing method. With two injections inside your mouth, the area around your lips is numbed. The anesthetic is injected near the nerve, which blocks the nerve’s function and temporarily prevents pain. The anesthesia works within one minute and lasts about two hours, though it can sometimes last longer.
EMLA cream is popular for lip filler treatments. It should be applied 30 minutes before the procedure to allow it to absorb and activate. The downside of EMLA is that it works superficially. You won’t feel the initial injection, but you may feel the lips being filled, which can cause a burning or uncomfortable sensation.

Lidocaine in Lip Fillers
A filler with lidocaine is very effective. In this method, the anesthetic is mixed directly into the filler. The downside is that the initial injection can still feel sensitive, as the lidocaine has not yet become active, and the beginning of the injection may feel uncomfortable because it takes a few seconds for the lidocaine to activate.
Some physicians also combine EMLA cream with lidocaine in the filler for extra numbing.

Not all brands offer fillers with lidocaine. Some manufacturers have a different policy, stating that they are unsure how lidocaine affects the quality of the hyaluronic acid. They maintain that they produce high-quality fillers and that any anesthesia can be provided separately, for example with a dental anesthetic. Other filler brands do offer versions with lidocaine included. Well-known filler brands that include lidocaine are:
That depends on the chosen anesthetic, the doctor's treatment technique, and the patient's sensitivity to pain. With dental anesthesia, there's no need to experience pain. If you prepare yourself for (a lot of) pain, it's always manageable.
EMLA Cream needs to take effect for a while (approximately 30 minutes). After removal, the EMLA Cream remains effective for 1-2 hours. A dental anesthetic usually takes effect 2 hours after the injections. Lidocaine in the filler generally has the shortest effect, wearing off fairly quickly, but it's also not needed for long.
Dental anesthesia prevents you from feeling any pain. The anesthetic temporarily blocks the nerve's function.
