Bocouture is one of the brands of botulinum toxin. Bocouture is produced by the manufacturer Merz.
In 1908, chemist Friedrich Merz founded the company, which today produces the botulinum toxin Bocouture/Xeomin. Over the past century, Merz has focused on several areas. For example, it has produced products and medicines for dentistry and for treating Alzheimer’s disease.
In 2005, Merz introduced its new botulinum toxin type A product. What made it innovative was that it contained no added complexing proteins just pure botulinum toxin type A. Initially, it was mainly used to treat movement disorders such as dystonia and spasms. In 2009, it received approval for cosmetic use.
Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism, produces the toxin (botulinum). This toxin originally contains several proteins. During the production process, Merz removes these proteins so that only pure botulinum toxin type A remains. Merz claims that patients treated with Bocouture/Xeomin cannot develop immunity to botulinum toxin, which would otherwise make wrinkle treatments ineffective.
Since 2010, Bocouture/Xeomin has received several approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating conditions such as dystonia, spasms, and for the cosmetic treatment of glabellar lines (frown lines).
In the United States, the botulinum toxin is sold under the brand name Xeomin, while in the rest of the world it is marketed as both Bocouture and Xeomin. Xeomin is available in 100U vials, while Bocouture is available in 50U vials. Xeomin and Bocouture are exactly the same product.
