I have previously used the Skin and Spirit Salon that was opposite the Anchor pub in Clowne. I have had many wonderful Indian head massages there where the service was warm, friendly and personal. It has since closed so I visited the “Aesthetics” salon in Mill Street to use a gift voucher from my stepdaughter. I’m still not clear if the two sites are part of the same Company, although my experience at the Aesthetics site was not quite as good. The massage was a little different to the Indian massage, although they did make that clear after I asked the question.
Skin & Spirit have since explained to me that they have merged with Skins and that the Indian Head Massage "same wonderful service" is provided at their sister location on the High Street. As my Step Daughter was asking to buy a gift voucher for an Indian Head Massage, why wasn't she directed to the sister site ? rather than selling her a voucher for a different massage at "a different kind of setting......by design"
The massage provided by Emily was professional if a little disturbed due to background noise outside (laughing, shouting, heavy footsteps on the stairs). The consent forms and aftercare were clearly explained. Apart from the massage not being quite what I was looking for, I got a more snooty, disinterested vibe from the staff. I could not get through on the phone when I tried to book an appointment so left a message. The girl who called me back seemed far more interested in telling me what booking slots were not available rather than what was. I was promised a text confirming my appointment which I did not receive. When I visited in person to confirm my appointment, the two staff on duty seemed more interested in eating their lunch and I felt a bit dismissed by them. I appreciate that staff are entitled to a break, but why were the two staff on duty taking theirs simultaneously (rather than rotating). It gives off a negative vibe to be reluctantly served by a member of staff holding their lunch in one hand and talking to me with their mouth full.
To be clear, I have no reason to doubt Emily’s credentials as a masseuse, but the overall service lacked warmth, engagement and I did not feel valued as a customer. I felt rather processed. I initially thought that was because I am a 60 year old male and probably not their typical customer. However, my stepdaughter also commented on the snooty vibe from when she purchased the voucher.
Going forward, I feel inclined to shop around for an Indian Head massage. It’s just a shame that the place I used to go to is now closed.
